With operations based in Catania, Windjet is an Italian low-cost airline providing scheduled and charter services from its hub at Catania-Fontanarossa airport to a number of domestic cities as well as to Central European, Eastern European and Russian destinations.
The airline was founded in 2003 and began operations in the same year on June 17. Windjet is owned exclusively by the Finaria Group and was born out of the ashes of the old Air Sicilia. It is Italy’s fourth busiest airline in terms of passenger figures.
Domestic destinations served include Palermo, Milan, Rome, Venice, Forfi, Verona, Pisa and Turino while services abroad include Paris, Moscow, Madrid, Barcelona, Bucharest, Saint Petersburg, Rostov and Zante. The majority of flights commence or conclude at Catania. All flights are served by Airbus aircraft with the airline’s fleet comprising ten A320s and two A319s capable of accommodating 180 and 142 passengers respectively.
During Windjet flights, passengers can expect no complimentary refreshments, although both food and drink can be purchased from flight staff at reasonable prices. Since all Windjet routes are short haul and attention is paid to minimising overheads so as to keep ticket prices low, in-flight entertainment is not offered on any flights.
While a budget ethos is central to the airline’s operations, the professionalism of cabin crew members is not compromised and passengers will find staff are friendly, courteous and have their safety and comfort at the forefront of their minds. Staff members speak Italian and English as a matter of course, while on international flights there will always be those capable of speaking the language of the country the flight is destined for or departing from.
Flights can be booked on the airline’s own website, paid for by credit card and are ticket-free, with passengers being issued reservation numbers for the purpose of checking in at the airport.
