Wizz Air is a Polish-Hungarian low-cost airline with a main base at Katowice International Airport in Poland and hubs at Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport, Budapest Ferihegy International Airport, Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, Poznań Ławica Airport, Aurel Vlaicu International Airport and Sofia Airport. The airline is joint-owned, with its biggest shareholder being the investment firm Indigo Partners.
The airline was established in 2003 and operations began on 19 May 2004 with an inaugural flight from Katowice. Within 3.5 months of operation, 250,000 passengers had been served and nearly 1.4 million after only a year; to date some five million plus passengers have used Wizz Air for Central European travel. With figures such as this, it’s not surprising that the readers of pasazer.com have voted the company the best low-fare airline in Poland.
Wizz Air provides scheduled services to a large number of European destinations including Stockholm, Amsterdam, Liverpool, Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt, Warsaw, Rome, Athens and Barcelona. Flights are operated by a fleet consisting exclusively of Airbus A320-200 aircraft, of which the airline has 13. None of the aircraft in the fleet is over three years old; hence all are modern, fuel-efficient planes.
During Wizz Air flights, passengers are offered a high standard of service from cabin crew, with attention to safety and comfort a priority, in spite of the airline’s budget ethos. Food and drink is not offered as part of the ticket price; however, it can be purchased from flight staff at reasonable prices. In-flight entertainment is not offered during Wizz Air flights.
Flights can be booked direct through Wizz Air’s website with facilities for paying by credit card and making changes where necessary. Bookings are ticket-free and passengers are sent an itinerary which includes a booking confirmation number for checking-in at the airport. Bookings can also be made via a call centre or at participating travel agents.
