Take your pick between taking a taxi, hopping on a bus or catching a train to the city centre. A train ride to the city takes about 30 minutes.
The most convenient way to get around in Billund is by taxi, which are surprisingly inexpensive. With bus routes covering the city, tourists can also opt for this economical choice. Bus routes in Billund are easy to navigate and buses are tourist-friendly.
Sightseeing in Billund
Legoland is the main reason why tourists make their way to Billund. With a great number of toys, a dizzying array of games and many hands-on activities for young ones, Legoland is Denmark’s best-loved theme park for children. Not just for ultimate fun, it offers opportunities for creative learning. However, the park is only aimed for kids 12 years old or under. No matter how tempted you are, don’t try to sit on one of those tiny Lego cars!
Apart from activities for kids, Billund also features a variety of artworks. Billund Library hosts regular art exhibitions where you can gasp at masterpieces. Sfirot, a 10-metre high steel construction impaling a 40-ton block of granite, is one of the creative landmarks in the city, while the Musical Water Fountain near the Jutland Savings Bank boasts awesome water jets which spurt to different beats.
Fun by night – eating, drinking and partying
Pickled herring anyone? Denmark is renowned for herring, be it finger-licking pickled herring, herring sandwiches or other kinds of herring dishes. Don’t forget to try the world-famous Danish pastries, while health-freaks can always opt for organic dishes which have gained popularity across the country.
Nightlife in Billund is as fun as watching the paint dry. You might think you have entered a ghost town when the night calls, as the streets are often empty and quiet. Your best bet is to head back to Legoland for night-time activities in the park. If you just can’t stay in bed, try hitting one of the many cafés in town which are open until late.
Fun by day - shopping and activities
Shopping in Billund is fun, with many shops located on Main street and in the city centre. Can’t find a parking spot? Follow the Danish and park anywhere, as close as possible to the shops. If you aren’t a serious shopper, head to a park in the city for some relaxing time in the sun. Not known as a green city for nothing, Billund is home to countless parks so you can visit a different park each day of your stay.
Daytrips
There are a number of attractions just outside of Billund which can be visited on a daytrip from the town. Located not far from Billund is Givskud Zoo, a combined safari park and zoo which includes 120 species of 1,000 animals from all over the planet.
Also located within daytrip distance from Billund is the uniquely beautiful Grene Sande, one of the few areas in Denmark where inland sand dunes occur. Grene Sande provides excellent terrain and scenery for a day of walking in some of Denmark’s most picturesque locations.
Further areas of natural beauty located close to Billund include Voldborg Lake, perfect for a picnic on a sunny day, and Frederikshaab Plantation, a great area for taking walks in the country which also contains a number of significant historical sites related to WWII.
Must-see attractions
Among Billund’s must-see attractions is the famous Legoland, Denmark’s major tourist attraction, whose complex is made up of an amazing 45 million Lego pieces. The park is situated on a vast 100,000 square metre area and is the main tourist attraction and centre of employment in the city.
Many of Billund’s must-see attractions are located in the area referred to as the Center Mobilium. Here visitors can visit the Aviation Museum, the Motor Museum and the Falck Museum. There are also a number of cafés and restaurants in the area, making it a destination where visitors can spend the whole day.
Also of interest is the Billund Kirke church, unusual in that it breaks away from the traditional architectural styles of European religious buildings. Billund Kirke is part of the Billund Centre, which also includes the Billund Theatre, an exhibition hall and a library.
Best time to go
Billund is characterised by a humid temperate climate that often produces volatile and unpredictable weather throughout the year. The best time to visit the town is during the summer season, between the months of May and August, when temperatures average around 25˚C. This, however, is also the school holiday period in Europe, so if you’re going to visit Legoland during this time expect to meet with masses of knee to thigh high tourists.
Rainy day suggestions
Since most of Legoland is situated outdoors, it doesn’t make for the best of rainy day outings. The charming Billund Museum, however, makes for an excellent rainy day excursion where visitors can learn from exhibitions which tell the history of Billund since the advent of the railway. There is also a horse and cart situated on the premises of the museum, so if the unpredictable weather takes a turn for the better, you can go for a pleasant trip around the town.
