A trip to Dallas
Probably best known for its 1980s TV show Dallas and the world-renowned Dallas Cowboys who consistently nail the Super Bowl, the ‘Big D’ is packed with magnificent sights to please everyone in the family. Dallas is dotted with museums, cathedrals and child-friendly venues. The city’s signature dish, ubiquitous Tex-Mex, is also not to be missed while nightlife here is more than invigorating. The city is home to a number of huge malls and brand-name boutiques; a pre-warning for fashionistas worldwide.
Flights to Dallas
With one of the largest airports in the world, Dallas receives a great number of tourists each year. The airport serves both domestic and international flights. Trains run regularly from the airport to the city, while taxis are aplenty in front of the airport.
Getting between cities is easy using the very reliable Amtrak railway network. Greyhound buses also operate to other cities in the country. Taxis are easy to find in Dallas but can be quite expensive. If you are travelling with family, it is a good idea to hire a car if you are familiar with the American style of driving. Attractions are not very close together and the sun will stop you exploring on foot at length.
Sightseeing in Dallas
Countless sights in the city means you will have to manage your time well. If you are a big fan of Dallas, one of the first stops should be Southfork, where the legendary series was born. For some historic intakes, head to Cathedral Santuario de Guadalupe, which is the landmark of Dallas, boasting a remarkable interior and exterior.
There is an array of child-friendly venues to keep little ones happy. Dallas Zoo is a must-visit, with some of the largest wild animals such as lions, tigers and elephants. Another spot not to be missed is Dallas Aquarium, where your children can gasp at all kinds of fish, amphibians and invertebrates including walking batfish and huge alligators. As the site where President Kennedy was assassinated, the Sixth Floor Museum is also a city highlight.
Fun by night – eating drinking and partying
You just can’t be in Dallas and not try the local favourite Tex-Mex, big on kicking chilli, meat stew and fajitas. If you aren’t a big fan of beef, opt for a dish of CFS instead. Not related to KFC, CFS is short for ‘chicken fried steak’, which is a typical finger-licking good Texan dish.
Put on your best dress and head out to join the thriving nightlife of Dallas. Notable venues are crammed along the streets of Deep Ellum and Greenville avenue, while the Knox side of Knox-Henderson is lined with endless pubs and clubs, as is the area around Sundance square. For those with young children, you might have to give clubbing a pass and hit the Dallas Theatre instead, where a number of remarkable performances are on offer.
Fun by day - shopping and activities
Dallas is a mecca for shopping enthusiasts worldwide. The internationally recognised store of Neiman Marcus is here, while the country’s oldest shopping centre, Highland Park Village, is not to be missed. If these two big stores aren’t enough to fulfil your shopping cravings, there are many other venues to drool over. Notable ones include Galleria Dallas, Northpark Centre, West Village and Mockingbird Station.
If your head isn’t turned by the glitter and glamour of designer labels, there are a number of outdoor activities to partake in other than shopping. Dallas is home to many amusements, water parks and wildlife centres as well as ranches and rodeos - what the city is famous for. There’s nothing better than showing off a photo of you at a real Texan rodeo to your friends back home.
